Despite solid pitching from Leslie Darville, the Bahamas team fell victim to the United States Virgin Islands on Monday, 6-1.
Darville recorded 11 strikeouts in a game that hinted at the potential of the Bahamas contingent in the tournament. However, this second loss knocks the team out of contention for advancement to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Darville struck out the first batter of the game in an inning that briefly showed the individual talent of the Bahamas team. Left fielder Rodney Forbes robbed the Virgin Islands of at least a double when he snatched a hard-hit shot out of the air in left field and fired the ball to D'Juan Seymour to snag a runner trying to take third base. The double play ended the inning.
However, passed balls and numerous player position changes proved to be the Achilles Heel for the Bahamas team, as the Virgin Islands advanced and scored two runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Anemic hitting and error-prone fielding proved just too difficult to overcome, as the Bahamas managed to score only one run in the fifth inning, and rarely threatened a confident Virgin Island team.
The Bahamas plays the Dominican Republic on Tuesday at 2pm.
