The Bahamas were soundly trounced by Yabucoa, Puerto Rico in Sunday's game, 13-0. Exhibiting first game jitters and a seeming lack of preparedness, the Bahamas team couldn't get anything started on either offense or defense, and fell to a Puerto Rican team that had already played one game on Saturday.
The game was called in the fifth inning due to the 10-run Mercy Rule.
Nearly 400 people showed up to watch the contest in the hot summer sun at the Triple Parque complex, and to cheer on their local teams. The small, but boistrous Bahamas contingent did their best to support their team by wearing Bahamas shirts and waving the flag.
Starting pitcher Paul Smith had a difficult time with the Puerto Rico batters, and was slammed for six runs in the first inning, one run in the second, and another six in the third, including a home run. The Puerto Rico team showed their skill with well-placed bunts and by consistently stealing bases on passed balls. They managed to move through 12 batters and score six runs in the first inning alone.
The Bahamas defense didn't provide much support to Smith either, as several Puerto Rico players reached base on fielding errors and missed pop flys. Offensively, the Bahamas could only produce three hits for the entire game, all singles.
Shaquille Rolle managed two singles--in the bottom of the first and third innings--while Paul Smith made it safely to first base in the second inning. Other than that, the Puerto Rico defense kept the Bahamas stifled all day long.
The Bahamas plays a tough Virgin Islands team today (Monday) at 10am.
